Sorry-Grateful

Me and my showtunes.

This time it’s Sondheim’s “Company.”  Describing the complexities of marriage, Bobby’s friends tell him:
            You’re sorry-grateful.
            Regretful-happy.
Why look for answers where none occur.

And since it’s Thanksgiving season, I’m reminding myself I should be grateful.

Patients with Lewy Body Dementia often wander – tottering after pleasant hallucinations or fleeing unpleasant ones.  That’s not a problem with Gary, though, because his Myasenthia Gravis has left him bedridden.

And prior to the worsening of his Lewy Body, his immobility was emotionally devastating to him and the boredom was shattering.  That’s no longer a problem with Gary, though, because his Lewy Body hallucinations have him believing he’s visiting friends and off on adventures.

His failing mind is protecting his failing body.
            I’m sorry-grateful.

His failing body is protecting his failing mind.
            Regretful-happy.

And I question why I can’t focus more on the gratitude.
Why look for answers where none occur.

  1. Good morning from the east coast of Canada. I read your blog several times this morning as I enjoy your writing and I also compare my husband’s actions to your’s . My man is not as far along in the Lewy Body state but he cannot get dressed without my help and I have to bathe him, etc. Our daughter and family is here for the weekend as it was my birthday yesterday. It is nice to have a distraction for a few days. I have rails on his bed to prevent him from falling out of bed and they help him get up as he can pull himself up using them. The day he got in the bathtub without me knowing and then could not get out was the worst. I really hurt my back pulling and pulling and I lost my cool and threatened all sorts of torture if he did that again. We got a bench from the Red Cross and that makes it safer. I would like to keep in touch with you as you probably have lots of hints that might help me.
Oh, by the way, we both take medical cannabis which certainly helps keep my arthritic pain under control and it just calms him.
